For the Jamrock Museum

Biography: Cde. Robert Stephenson
Cde. Robert Stephenson was a true Jamaican patriot, an athlete, activist, and cultural ambassador whose legacy stretches across sports, politics, education, and public service. Born to the dynamic and respected Eulah Stephenson. Robert was former President of the Student Union at Hunter College in New York—Robert Stephenson inherited a passion for leadership, justice, and the advancement of the Jamaican people.
Robert proudly represented Jamaica as a spokesperson for international competitions and on sports trips abroad, including engagements connected to the Olympic movement. His involvement in athletics was not merely about medals, but about lifting the Jamaican spirit on the global stage. His talent and charisma earned him the opportunity to work with iconic sportswear brand PUMA, where he contributed to branding Jamaican athleticism with pride and excellence—further helping shape the international image of Jamaican sports.
Robert’s passion for nation-building extended beyond sports. A lifelong and devoted member of the People’s National Party (PNP), he committed himself wholeheartedly to progressive politics. Known affectionately as “Cde. Robert Stephenson,” he was a comrade in every sense—generous with his time, ideas, and heart. His belief in social justice, equity, and the power of youth leadership made him a respected figure in party circles and among the broader Jamaican public.
As a man deeply rooted in volunteerism and activism, Robert embodied the spirit of public service. Whether mentoring young athletes, organizing grassroots initiatives, or participating in political outreach, his work was always focused on uplifting others. His charisma, intelligence, and unwavering integrity attracted the friendship and respect of many—including two of Jamaica’s most important leaders: the late Prime Minister Michael Manley and former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson.
Robert was also a powerful bridge between the Jamaican diaspora and the homeland. Having spent time in New York, where his mother Eulah was a fierce community advocate, Robert understood the critical role the diaspora played in shaping Jamaica’s development and identity. He served as a proud cultural envoy, always seeking to connect Jamaican values with the wider world.
